It is simply to your finish it begins to break down, nevertheless slap-upwards finale rescues they regarding ‘red’. Admirably staged and you may intelligently dialogued, it will have zero higher challenge in the living down its incredibly ugly name.” [ 8 ]

This new film’s creator and you will director, Robert Rossen, sets up a great multidimensional chess game, to possess mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), an excellent cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and an effective scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sis (Nina Foch) worked from the gambling enterprise and you may old a good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). Brand new caustically epigrammatic script, the newest cast’s suavely controlled body language away from like and you can risk, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and stylishly cocky pictures (along with their political conscience) get this pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle an invisible antique of one’s category.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, once the a police inspector, and within the score . Even though the area comes after a common trend, the fresh new characterizations try fresh and also the activities good enough to help you overbalance. Dialogue are terse and you may relevant, preventing the sentimental, phoney reach. Strange camera angles show up once in a while in order to heighten attract and you may momentarily stop the eye. Strong teamplay by Robert Rossen, increasing given that manager-scripter, and Milton Holmes, new creator and you may representative manufacturer, and additionally helps with making it a delicate design.” [ eleven ]

It is primarily a point of viewing Mr. Powell experience their paces fashionably if you are a massive shed of actors and you can stars offer him regular support. Evelyn Keyes performs the great nothing lady whom brings about new finest in your and Ellen Received ‘s the easy and you can slinky vixen whom gets him into the jams. Thomas Gomez was oily once the villain and Lee J. Cobb really does another in a position journey as the a weary cops inspector exactly who ultimately closes the actual situation. Many drinking and smoking is accomplished by the most of the alarmed.” [ 12 ]
